The Champagne Region of France
While many lovers of champagne know all about the intricacies of how champagne is produced, many won’t have visited the region where our exquisite drink is actually harvested and produced.
One way of putting that right is by following the infamous champagne trail; it’s well sign-posted and a joy to see (known traditionally as the “Route Touristique de Champagne”), winding its way through an enchanting series of vineyards and villages perched precariously on jagged, picturesque slopes.
Here’s a brief idea of what you will find in two of the best-known regions:
Its green and luscious countryside is full of forests and vineyards intertwined historically with the coronations of the Kings of France. At Reims it’s a good idea to exit at Tinquerex, which gives way to fantastic scenery.
This is a place of sloping, majestic landscapes – known universally as one of the best wine-growing regions that France has given birth to. Begin your journey in either Epernay or Reims – it’s a 70km trail that you won’t want to miss, weaving its way through one of the best known regional nature reserves of its kind.
